Sara Renner back to training after birth of daughter

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Cross-country skier Sara Renner is back to training for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver following the birth of her daughter, Aria Grandi, in February.  However, being pregnant didn’t take the 31-year-old off the slopes.I skied the day before she was born. Skiing was a good compliment to the waddle. It was really
uncomfortable to walk, but to ski? I was so glad I was pregnant in the
winter. I didn’t train but I really do love my sport and even a winter without it, I think, would be very difficult for me.Sara says that she is able to train because her husband, Thomas Grandi, an alpine skier, has turned into Mr. Mom. However, she still treasures her time with her daughter and schedules as much as she can around Aria’s schedule.I knew that to have a family, it would be better to have it as
early as possible. I definitely knew it would be easier
to come back if I had more time but at the same time, you can’t rush
these kinds of things either. You know, I’m never going to have
a young baby again, and I really want to enjoy it and make sure that I
have energy for that.

Vancouver is three years away, so I have time. I
know I have some time to be in my best shape. I won’t be in my best
shape this year but it will come. There’s quite a few women who’ve had babies who are cross-country
skiers so I had some great advice on not panicking and not rushing it.

It takes nine months for your body to [prepare for] a
baby so it’s going to take a while for your body to come back.Sara is not rushing herself to get back in shape. She knows it will take time.  However, the skier is impressed with how easily her training levels have come back to her.I really
enjoy my training because it’s a good break but at the same time, I
can’t wait to get home. I have a focus in my day and that’s sport when
it has to be and then my family for the rest of the day. I’ve really returned to my sport refreshed and full of energy. Having a child is such a great thing to come home to also.

Radiology’s Lament

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

From MIT’s Technology Review (via):
MIT researchers are developing a new kind of x-ray imager that uses information that traditional machines ignore. By looking at how tissue refracts the rays, not simply at how it absorbs them, the researchers hope to increase the resolution of mammography, enabling doctors to detect smaller tumors earlier. The basic physics behind x-ray imaging hasn’t changed in more than 100 years. Most hospitals have gotten rid of film and gone digital, but their images still record the same kind of information: how a part of the patient’s body absorbs the rays….Hundreds of interference images are then combined with the hundreds of absorption images into a single picture that a radiologist can read. Berthold Horn, a member of MIT’s computer-science and artificial-intelligence laboratory, is developing algorithms to process the x-ray images. “The computer becomes an integral part of the imaging system,” he says. Similar filters are used in x-ray astronomy, in which the objects of interest–the stars–are very, very far away. Horn and Lanza were the first to apply this technique, called coded-aperture imaging, to nearby objects. They have already employed it to improve the resolution of a gamma-ray imaging technique used on lab animals, and they believe they will see similar results with x-ray imaging.
I think it must be maddening being in the radiology field. You’re using 100-year old technology while living in the wonder of the computer age, and you know it can be done so much better.”Where’s my medical tricorder and sensor cluster!,” the modern radiologist ululates! (yes, I own a thesaurus)

Speaking of Star Trek, when I first heard they’d fired Scotty’s ashes up into space I thought “That’s cool!”
But they didn’t. They shot them up into a low orbit so they’d come back down again (and almost got lost in the mountains of New Mexico)!WTF?! Why didn’t they shoot them off to travel into space for eternity?

FS2004 screenie ..(Gus)

Hello,

FS2004 Alphasim F-8 Crusader (Reloaded)
In 1953 the F8U-1 Crusader won the Navy competition for the new carrier-based day fighter. It flew supersonic on its maiden flight in 1955. A Crusader set a national speed record in 1956 by flying over 1000 mph, for which it won the Thompson Trophy. In 1957 Major John Glenn flew an F8U non-stop from Los Angeles to new York, setting a transcontinental speed record. In 1958 Vought received the first Certificate of merit ever awarded an aircraft manufacturer by the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics for the design, development and production of a US Navy aircraft. In the Vietnam conflict the Crusader had the highest kill ratio over communist jets of any Navy aircraft. The F8U series enjoyed a long service life which was extended in the 1960s by remanufacturing and updating existing aircraft. Crusaders flew in Navy reserve units until 1987, and the French navy flew its Crusaders well into the 1990’s.** FS2004 only **Features - - SIX unique models and high-detail texture sets1. F-8B USN2. FS2004 MAAM-SIM DOUGLAS R4D / DC-3 / C-47 extra pack!!
History:The DC-3 was engineered by a team led by chief engineer Arthur E. Raymond, and first flew on December 17,1935 (the 32nd anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk). The plane was the result of a m-arathon phone call from American Airlines CEO Cyrus Smith to Donald Douglas requesting the design of animproved successor to the DC-2. The amenities of the DC-3 (including sleeping berths on early models and an in-flight kitchen) popularized air travel in the United States. With only three refueling stops, eas-tbound transcontinental flights across America taking approximately 15 hours became possible. Westbound trips took 17 hours 30 minutes - still a significant improvement over the competing Boeing 247. Before thearrival of the DC-3, such a trip would entail short hops in commuter aircraft, during the day, coupled withtrain travel overnight.Early U.S. airlines like United, American, TWA and Eastern ordered over 400 DC-3s. These fleets paved the way for the modern American air travel industry, quickly replacing trains as the favored means of longdistance travel across the United States. Piedmont Airlines operated DC-3s from 1948 to 1963. One of Piedmont’s DC-3s, operated by the Carolinas Aviation Museum, continues to fly to air shows today and hasbeen used in various movies.During World War II, many civilian DC-3s were drafted for the war effort and nearly 10,000 military versionsof the DC-3 were built, under the designations C-47, C-53, R4D and Dakota. Peak production of the type was reached in 1944 with 4853 being delivered. The armed forces of many countries used the DC-3 and its militaryvariants for the transport of troops, cargo and wounded. Licensed copies were built in Japan as Showa L2D(487 aircraft) and in the USSR as the Lisunov Li-2 (between 2200 and 4900 aircraft, per varying sources).about:*NOTE: There is an error in the (MEGA_PACK) installer with the disk cost saying it only needs 108 mb. to install, please disregard this message, and make sure you have 4.10 gb. free!Aircraft:*C-47*DC-3*R4D-6*XC-47C*180 different liveries mega-pack only*custom sounds by Eagle -eYe- ProductionsScenery:*Doolittle Raid - Task Force 16*Normandy American Cemetery & Memorial*Omaha Beach, Normandy*Reading Regional Airport KRDG (MAAM)*U.S.S Stennis*Don’t forget to add the scenery to your scenery library! Fs2004 Golden Age - Travel Air 6000 Alaskan Adventure
Three famous names in aviation history belong to the manufacturers/designers of the Travel Air. Walter Beech, Lloyd Stearman, and Clyde Cessna formed the Travel Air Manufacturing Company in Wichita, Kansas in January of 1925. Travel Air planes accounted for just over 50% of Department of Commerce license applications for August 1928. The first Travel Air 6000 took to the air April 15, 1928 and a legend was born. The design of the Travel Air 6000 expanded on the concept of the Travel Air 5000, which was the first commercial aircraft to cross the Pacific (July 1927). The summer of 1928 Walter Beech organized a cross country tour promoting the 6000 and by Fall had 14 firm orders. Lucrative air mail contracts with the idea of passenger service as a second income fueled entrepreneurs’ plans. But passengers became more of an income opportunity, and Travel Air modified its existing monoplane design to promote “executive flying.” Improvements included a toilet/washroom, luxurious interior, the best engines available, wide windows, and updated instrumentation. The price at the factory ranged from $13,000 to $13,500. The most expensive Travel Air was a $20,000 custom built Travel Air A-6000-A power by a Pratt & Whitney engine for actor Wallace Beery. While intended for executive flying, Travel Airs saw more use as “feeder liners”; early commuter airlines like Delta operated them, as did Texas Air Transport (later TWA) and Woodley Airways (later Alaska Airlines). Bush pilots in Canada and Alaska discovered the ruggedness, load carrying ability, and dependability of the Travel Air, and it became the bush plane of choice for many. One of the more famous companies to use Travel Airs was Johnson’s Flying Service of Missoula, Montana. Once described as a “virtual air force of old planes”, Johnson’s maintained Forest Service contracts well into the 1960’s and used both Ford Tri Motors and Travel Airs on floats or wheels to haul smoke jumpers and freight to remote regions. A free add-on effects package is included with each download that once installed will allow you to deploy smoke jumpers. This effect is also available for use with other aircraft and is available on our downloads page at now cost. The Travel Air 6000 Alaskan Adventure Pack brings to FS9 the experience of bush flying in remote Alaska in a way never before presented for the flight simulator. In the package are 5 distinct aircraft representing aircraft flying today. There are 3 B-6000 versions: the land plane, the float plane and a smoke jumper plane, representing the many roles this great plane of the Golden Age fulfilled. There are 2 of the powerful A-6000 models, both land and float planes, powered by the 450 hp Pratt and Whitney SC-1. All aircraft are faithfully rendered with flight dynamics representing the actual aircraft specifications. Effects and animations include: fully animated pilot, complete VC with operable controls, switches, windows, and animated landing lights. Included as well is a custom scenery package, complete with missions: Shakun Inlet, Alaska! This scenery package creates the bush flying environment adding the immersive experience of the entire package. Try your piloting skills with custom scenarios designed to test the skills of pilot and machine. Its all here for you with the Golden Age Simulations Travel Air 6000 Alaskan Adventure Package!

FSX FSX - RAZBAM - McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee (Reuploaded again !!)
The F2H-2 was first ordered in May of 1948, and the first example (BuNo 123204) flew on August 18, 1949. A total of 364 F2H-2 Banshees were built, the first being delivered in the winter of 1949 and the last in May of 1952.The F2H-2 Banshee was delivered to the following Navy and Marine Corps squadrons: VF-11, VF-12, VF-22, VF-62, VF-171, VF-172, VMF-122, VMF-214, VMF-224, and VMJ-1.The high climb rate and the good altitude performance of the F2H-2 made it attractive as an escort fighter. VF-172 arrived in Korean waters aboard the USS Essex (CV-9) in August of 1951. Their first mission was to escort a flight of USAF B-29s in an attack on some North Korean railroad marshaling years on August 25, 1951.This combat cruise ended in November 1951. Since Banshees were assigned with higher priority to the Sixth Fleet in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, the Navy F2H-2s did not return to the Korean War zone until the autumn of 1952.In September 1952, the Banshee returned to Korean waters, with VF-11 deploying aboard the USS Kearsarge(CV-33). They were followed by VF-22 and VF-62 in June of 1953, deploying aboard the USS Lake Champlain (CVA-39).FS9/FSX version-6 high detailed models with 11 different textures. -High detailed virtual cockpit, fully functional and clickable-Custom gauges-Custom Sound package
